What’s Included in a Maternity Session: Choosing the Right Package

When you begin looking for a maternity photographer, the packages can feel a little confusing. One offers a certain number of images, another includes prints, a third speaks of studio time and gowns. It is easy to feel unsure of what you actually need, and what you are truly paying for.

I believe choosing your session should feel warm and clear, never overwhelming. So let me walk you through what a thoughtful maternity package includes, and how to find the one that suits the images you dream of and the season you are in.

What a maternity package really includes

At its heart, a maternity package is not simply a number of photos. It is an entire experience, from the moment you plan your session to the day your finished artwork arrives. A considered package holds all of that together so nothing feels transactional.

Most of my packages include pre-session planning where we discuss your vision, professional guidance and posing on the day, access to my collection of gowns, expert retouching of your final images, and a gallery of beautifully edited photographs. The differences between packages usually come down to session length, the number of images, and how much printed artwork is included.

Studio, on-location or underwater

One of the first choices to make is where your session takes place, because this shapes the whole feel of your images. Each option has its own quiet magic.

A studio session offers control, softness and timeless portraits, which I write about in my guide to stunning studio maternity portraits. An on-location session, perhaps on a Sydney beach at golden hour, brings natural light and a sense of place. And for something truly unique, my underwater Pool Serenity experience creates weightless, ethereal images unlike anything else. Some mothers choose to combine settings, and I am always happy to shape a package around that.

Time, guidance and gowns

Something mothers often underestimate is how much the experience itself matters, particularly when you are heavily pregnant. A rushed session rarely produces relaxed images, so time and guidance are part of what you are paying for.

Within your session I guide you through every pose, so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands or how to stand. My gowns are there so you feel beautiful without sourcing a thing, and I keep the pace gentle and unhurried. If you would like to prepare, my thoughts on what to wear and how to prepare for your maternity photoshoot will help you feel ready.

Digital images and finished artwork

Every package includes a gallery of professionally edited digital images, and this is the part most mothers focus on first. It is worth thinking, though, about how you will actually enjoy those images once they arrive.

This is where prints and albums come in. Some of my packages include print credits or an heirloom album, while others can have them added. I gently encourage every mother to print at least a few favourites, because a photograph truly comes alive on the wall. My article on turning your maternity photos into fine-art prints explains how I help with this through my Heirloom Studio.

Add-ons worth considering

Beyond the core package, a few thoughtful additions can make your images go further. These are entirely optional, and I only ever suggest what genuinely suits your story.

Popular additions include extra retouched images, a larger heirloom album, framed wall art for a particular room, and a maternity and newborn pairing so your before and after sit together beautifully. If you are unsure, we can begin with a core package and add pieces once you have seen your gallery and fallen for your favourites.

How to choose the right package for you

With all of that in mind, choosing becomes much simpler. Start with the images you dream of, then work backwards to the package that makes them possible.

Ask yourself a few gentle questions. Do you want a single hero portrait for the wall, or a fuller collection to remember the whole session? Is this a standalone maternity shoot, or the beginning of a maternity and newborn story? Do you want your finished images as prints and an album, or mainly digital files? Once you know what you are picturing, the right package tends to reveal itself, and I am always glad to help you decide personally.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is usually included in a maternity photography package?

Most thoughtful packages include session planning, professional guidance and posing, access to gowns, expert retouching, and a gallery of edited images. Higher packages tend to add session time, more images and printed artwork such as prints or an album.

Do your packages include prints?

Some do, and others can have prints or an heirloom album added. I encourage printing your favourites, and through my Heirloom Studio I help you choose the right images, sizes and framing.

Can I combine studio and on-location in one package?

Often, yes. Many mothers love mixing settings, and I am happy to shape a package around a studio, on-location or underwater combination where time allows.

How do I know which package is right for me?

Start with the images you dream of and how you want to enjoy them, whether on the wall, in an album or as digital files. From there the right package becomes clear, and I am always glad to guide you.

Can I add prints or images after my session?

Yes. Many mothers begin with a core package and add extra images, prints, framing or an album once they have seen their gallery. There is no need to decide everything upfront.
