Why Every Mother Deserves to Be in the Picture
There is a question I return to often, both as a photographer and as a mother. What if there were no pictures of me? Not the hurried selfies or the photos we quietly delete, but real, beautiful images of me here, in this season, loving my children.
For so many mothers, the honest answer is that there are almost none. We are the ones holding the camera, arranging everyone else, stepping out of the frame so the picture looks right. And slowly, without ever meaning to, we disappear from the family story we are working so hard to create. This is my gentle reminder of why you belong in the picture too.
The mother who is always missing
If you scroll back through your own photographs, you may notice something quietly heartbreaking. Your children are everywhere. Your partner appears often. And you, the person at the very centre of this family, are barely there at all.
It is rarely a choice made on purpose. It is a thousand small moments of putting yourself last, of not feeling ready, of being the one who documents rather than the one documented. But those small moments add up to a large absence, and one day it is the absence your children will notice most.
What if there were no pictures of me
I do not ask that question to frighten anyone. I ask it because it changed everything for me. When I imagined my own children one day looking for images of their mother and finding hardly any, I understood how much these photographs truly matter.
Our children do not see our imperfections the way we do. They do not notice the things we are waiting to fix. They see the person who held them, sang to them and loved them completely. A photograph of you now is a gift to them later, proof of a love they may only half remember but will feel forever.
You do not have to wait until you feel ready
So many mothers tell me they will book a session once they have lost the weight, or their hair behaves, or life feels a little calmer. I understand that feeling deeply, and I want to gently release you from it. There is no finish line coming, and this season will not wait.
Your children love you exactly as you are today. The softness, the tiredness, the tenderness, all of it is part of the mother they adore. You do not need to become someone else before you deserve to be photographed. You are already worthy of the frame.
The beauty and chaos of motherhood
Amidst the chaos of raising little ones, there is a quiet elegance, a beauty that transcends perfection and embraces the raw authenticity of motherhood. This is what I most love to photograph. Not a staged, flawless version of you, but the real, radiant transformation of a woman becoming and being a mother.
Motherhood is a journey where love shines through every moment, even the messy ones. When I photograph mothers, I am not trying to hide the realness of this life. I am trying to honour it, so that you can look back one day and see not what you wished you looked like, but how deeply you were living and loving.
Gentle ways to start being in the picture
If a full session still feels like a leap, you can begin more softly, and any step counts. Hand your phone to your partner and ask them to photograph you with your children, even on an ordinary morning. Say yes to being in the frame at birthdays and holidays rather than always holding the camera.
Then, when you feel ready for something lasting, a professional session gives you images made with real care, images you will be proud to hang. The goal is not perfection. It is simply to exist, visibly and lovingly, in the story of your family.
Stepping in front of the lens
I know that stepping in front of the camera can feel daunting after so long behind it. My whole approach is built to make that easy. I guide you through every pose, I keep the experience calm and unhurried, and I help you see yourself the way your family already does. If you would like to understand more of how I think about this work, my reflection on the art of maternity photography speaks to it too.
Whether it is a maternity portrait, a tender image with your newborn, or a motherhood session as your children grow, the point is simply this. To make sure that you, the heart of your family, are lovingly and permanently part of the picture.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a motherhood photography session?
It is a session centred on you as a mother, often with your children, created to make sure you are beautifully present in your family's photographs rather than always behind the camera.
I do not feel photo ready. Should I still book?
Yes, gently and wholeheartedly. Your children love you exactly as you are now, and this season will not wait. There is no need to change anything before you deserve to be photographed.
Can my children be part of the session?
Of course. Some mothers choose solo portraits, while others love including their little ones. Both are beautiful, and I will guide you through whichever feels right.
Why does it matter that I am in the photos?
Because one day your children will look for images of the mother who loved them, and they deserve to find you there. Photographs of you now are a lasting gift to them later.
How do I feel more comfortable in front of the camera?
Start small, with everyday photos taken by your partner, and choose a photographer who guides you gently through every pose. Feeling safe and directed is what allows you to relax and look like yourself.
