Capturing Every Chapter: Maternity Photography for Your Second or Third Baby
There is a quiet pattern I see often. The first pregnancy is documented beautifully, with a maternity session, a growing bump captured lovingly. And then, second or third time around, life is busier, and those photographs quietly never happen.
I understand completely. With a toddler underfoot and a hundred things to hold together, booking a session for yourself can feel like a luxury you do not have time for. But I gently want to make the case that every baby, and every bump, deserves to be immortalised.
Every baby deserves their own chapter
Each of your children arrives into a different family, a different season, a different version of you. Your second baby's pregnancy is not a repeat of the first, it is its own story, with its own hopes and its own tenderness.
One day, your younger child may look through the family albums and wonder why there are so many images of their older sibling's arrival and so few of their own. Photographing each pregnancy is a way of saying to every child, you were waited for and loved just as deeply.
Including your older children
One of the great joys of a second or third maternity session is that you are no longer photographed alone. Your older children become part of the story, and these images are some of the most moving I make.
A toddler's hand resting on the bump, an older sibling kissing where the baby grows, the whole family gathered around the newest arrival to come. My guide to family maternity photoshoots speaks more to weaving your children in gently, even when they are little and full of energy.
Letting go of feeling too busy
I know the biggest barrier is simply time and energy, and I want to make this as easy as possible. A session with me is unhurried and warm, and I take care of the planning, the posing and the gowns so you barely have to think.
You do not need your home spotless or your older child perfectly behaved. The beauty and chaos of motherhood is exactly what we are honouring, and a little real life in the frame only makes the images more true. If it helps to plan the timing around your family, my thoughts on maternity, newborn and family sessions lay out a gentle rhythm.
How a second session feels different from your first
Mothers are often surprised by how different a second or third session feels, and almost always in the loveliest way.
The first time, there are nerves. You do not quite know what to expect, you are unsure how to stand, and there is a self-consciousness that takes a little while to melt. By the second pregnancy, that is largely gone. You know your body, you know what a shoot involves, and you arrive with a confidence that shows in every frame.
There is also a different quality to the emotion. A first pregnancy is full of anticipation of the unknown. A second or third carries something quieter and deeper, because you already know exactly what is coming. You know the weight of a newborn on your chest, and the particular ache of how quickly it passes. That knowing sits in your face in a way I can photograph, and it is beautiful.
The practical side changes too. Sessions with older children are shorter and more flexible by design, and I plan them around nap times and school pick-ups rather than around what would be ideal for me.
Where these images belong
The photographs from a first pregnancy often end up beautifully framed. The ones from later pregnancies, in my experience, are far more likely to stay on a hard drive, and I would gently encourage you not to let that happen.
If your first baby's maternity portrait hangs on a wall, consider a matching piece for each of the babies who followed, so that the wall tells the whole story rather than just its opening chapter. A set of three, hung together, is one of the most moving things I help families create.
If printing feels like one more task in an already full season, that is exactly what my Heirloom Studio is for. I help you choose the images, the size and the finish, and my guide to turning your maternity photos into fine-art prints explains how it works.
A gift to your growing family
These photographs are not really about this pregnancy alone. They are about the family you are becoming, captured at a moment that will never come again in quite the same way.
Years from now, these are the images your children will treasure, proof of the love that surrounded each of them before they even arrived. That is a gift worth making time for, however busy the season.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I still do maternity photos for my second baby?
Yes, wholeheartedly. Each pregnancy is its own story, and photographing every baby means each of your children can one day see how deeply they were waited for and loved.
Can my older children be in the maternity photos?
Absolutely, and it is one of the loveliest parts. A toddler's hand on the bump or an older sibling kissing where the baby grows makes for some of the most moving images of all.
I feel too busy to organise a shoot. How does it work?
I take care of the planning, posing and gowns, so a session is easy and unhurried. You do not need a spotless home or a perfectly behaved toddler, just to arrive as you are.
When should I book my second maternity session?
The same gentle window applies, usually between twenty-eight and thirty-six weeks. Booking early in your second trimester secures your date before those busy weeks arrive.
What if my older child will not sit still?
That is completely normal and never a problem. I photograph children with patience and gentle direction, and a little movement and real life in the frame only makes the images more genuine.
