Maternity Photoshoot Ideas: Poses, Styling and Inspiration

When mothers come to me for the first time, the question I hear most is not about cameras or lighting. It is, quietly, "What will I actually do?"

So if you are gathering ideas for your maternity photoshoot, let me reassure you straight away. You do not need to arrive with a list of perfect poses. My role is to guide you gently through all of it. But gathering inspiration beforehand is lovely, because it helps us shape a session that feels like you. Here are the ideas I come back to again and again.

Start with a feeling, not a pose

The most beautiful maternity images are rarely about a clever pose. They are about a feeling: the quiet anticipation, the hand resting on the bump, the closed eyes and the soft smile. Before we talk about anything else, I like to know how you want to feel when you look back at these photographs. Calm and elegant? Joyful and full of movement? Tender, with your partner close? That feeling guides every choice we make, from the location to the light to the way I direct you on the day.

Flattering poses that always work

A few simple shapes are flattering for almost everyone, and they will form the backbone of your gallery:

  • Standing side-on, with your weight on your back foot and one hand cradling the bump, to show its beautiful curve.

  • Hands framing the belly, one above and one below, which draws the eye gently to your baby.

  • A slow walk along the sand or through soft light, so the images feel natural and full of life.

  • Seated, looking down at your bump, for a quiet, reflective moment.

  • With your partner behind you, their hands joining yours, for connection without stiffness.

You will not need to remember any of this on the day. I will talk you into each one, a small adjustment at a time, so it never feels stiff or posed.

Styling and outfit inspiration

What you wear changes the whole mood of a session. A few ideas that photograph beautifully:

  • Flowing fabrics in soft, neutral tones move gorgeously and never date.

  • A fitted piece that follows the line of your bump shows its shape most clearly.

  • A long dress with movement is wonderful on the beach, where the breeze becomes part of the picture.

  • For studio sessions, simple and elegant always wins over busy patterns.

If you would like, bring two or three options and we will choose together on the day. Many mothers love having one draped, artistic look and one that feels more like themselves.

Bring what matters to you

Some of my favourite images include something meaningful: a first pair of tiny shoes, a scan photograph, a hand-written note to the baby, or simply your older child pressing a kiss to the bump. These small, personal touches are what make a gallery feel like your story rather than a set of pretty pictures. If you are planning a family session, we can weave your other children into a few frames and then give you some quiet ones on your own.

Choosing your setting

Both studio and outdoors are beautiful, and they simply offer different moods. A studio session gives us soft, controlled light and a calm, private space. The beaches of Sydney give openness, movement and that gentle morning light, whether we meet at Bondi or another quiet stretch of coast. And if you are drawn to something truly unique, my underwater Pool Serenity sessions let you float weightless and free. If you cannot decide, we can talk it through, and there are no wrong answers.

A gentle word on nerves

Almost every mother tells me she is not photogenic, or that she feels awkward in front of a camera. And almost every one of them is surprised by how easy it felt once we began. You are allowed to simply be present, to breathe, and to enjoy this short, extraordinary season. That ease is exactly what makes the images feel real, and it is the part of my work I love most.

"I am so grateful to have created such loving memories out of a small moment in time, memories I will cherish forever." Kind words from a recent mother.

Let's plan your session

If these ideas have stirred something, I would love to help you bring them to life. Get in touch and we will plan a maternity session shaped entirely around you, your bump and the feeling you want to remember.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to plan a maternity photoshoot?

The most flattering window is usually between 28 and 36 weeks, when your bump is beautifully round and you are still comfortable and full of energy. If you are expecting twins, we often bring the session a little earlier.

Do I need to know how to pose?

Not at all. I guide you through every pose, hand and small adjustment on the day. Most mothers arrive a little unsure and are surprised by how natural and relaxed it feels once we begin.

Can my partner and children be part of the shoot?

Absolutely. I love including partners and older children for a few frames, then giving you some quiet, reflective images on your own. We simply keep everyone in soft, complementary tones.

How many outfits should I bring?

Two or three is perfect. Many mothers love one flowing, artistic piece and one that feels more like their everyday self, and we choose together on the day.
