What to Wear for Your Maternity Photoshoot

What you wear is the question almost every mother asks me before her session, and it is a lovely one to plan for. The right outfit will not only flatter your bump, it will help you feel like yourself, which is when the most beautiful images happen.

Here is how I guide the mothers I photograph, so you can arrive feeling calm and prepared.

Choose fabrics that move

Soft, flowing fabrics are the most forgiving and the most beautiful. They follow your shape gently, catch the light, and move with you, which is especially lovely outdoors where a sea breeze can lift a dress into something magical. Heavier, stiff fabrics tend to sit flat and hide the very curve we are there to celebrate. Chiffon, silk, jersey and fine knits all photograph beautifully, and a little length or a soft train gives us movement to play with.

Decide how much of the bump to show

There is no right answer here, only what feels right for you. Two approaches both photograph beautifully:

  • A fitted piece, such as a stretch dress or a simple bodysuit, that follows the line of your belly and shows its shape clearly.

  • A flowing dress with a gathered waist that drapes over the bump, for a softer, more romantic feel.

Many mothers love having one of each, so we can move between a clean, elegant look and a soft, artistic one. If you are still gathering inspiration, my guide to maternity photoshoot ideas shows how different outfits shape the mood of a gallery.

Keep colours soft and timeless

Neutral and muted tones, such as cream, soft white, stone, sage, dusty blue and warm earth shades, age the most gracefully and keep the focus on you. Busy prints and bold logos tend to date quickly and pull the eye away. If you love colour, a single gentle tone usually works better than a pattern. Think of the shades you would choose for a beautiful linen tablecloth or a favourite cashmere jumper, soft and quiet rather than loud.

Studio versus beach

The setting shapes the outfit:

  • For studio sessions, simple and sculptural is stunning. A length of fabric, a fitted dress, or even soft draping can look like fine art against a clean backdrop.

  • For the beach or outdoors, longer dresses with movement are wonderful, because the wind and the open light become part of the photograph.

A note on maternity gowns

If you would love a true showstopper, a hired or made-to-measure maternity gown can be worth it. A long tulle or chiffon gown with a train photographs like something from a painting, especially on the beach where it catches the wind, or trailing across a studio floor. You do not need to buy one. Many of the mothers I photograph hire a gown for the day, and there are lovely Sydney studios and online hire services that post Australia-wide. If you would like, I can point you towards a few that I know photograph beautifully. And if a gown feels like too much, please do not worry. A simple dress you already love, in a soft tone, is every bit as timeless.

Think about your partner and children

If your partner or older children are joining, keep them in the same soft palette as you, rather than matching exactly. Tones that sit together gently look natural and considered, never staged. Avoid bright slogans or strong patterns on little ones, as they draw the eye away from the connection between you. A bumps and bubs session that brings your newborn in later will feel beautifully cohesive if the family palette carries through.

The small things that help

  • Choose something you can move and breathe in comfortably. Comfort shows in your face.

  • Bring a couple of options if you are unsure, and we will choose together on the day.

  • Simple jewellery, or none at all, keeps the focus where it belongs.

  • If your feet will be bare on the beach, that is perfect. If we are in studio, soft bare feet or simple heels both work.

  • Consider your underwear: seamless, nude tones sit invisibly under flowing fabric.

"Within moments of arriving, I could see her love and passion for her work, and the results speak volumes." Kind words from a recent mother.

Still unsure? That is what I am here for

Please do not worry about getting this perfectly right. Choosing outfits is part of how I look after you, and I am always happy to talk it through before your session so you feel completely at ease.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you provide dresses, or should I bring my own?

Many mothers bring their own favourites, and I am always happy to advise on what will photograph beautifully. If you would like guidance on hiring or buying a gown, just ask when we plan your session.

What colours photograph best for maternity photos?

Soft, muted tones such as cream, stone, sage and dusty blue are the most timeless and keep all the attention on you. A single gentle colour works far better than a busy print.

Should my outfit be fitted or flowing?

Both are lovely, and they simply create different moods. Fitted pieces show the shape of your bump clearly, while flowing fabrics feel soft and romantic. Most mothers bring one of each.

What should my partner wear?

Keep your partner in the same soft palette as you, without matching exactly. Gentle, complementary tones look natural and considered, and avoid bold logos or strong patterns.
