Maternity and Newborn Photography for Twins and Multiples
The first thing a mother carrying twins usually says to me is an apology.
She apologises for asking whether she is too late. She apologises for not being sure she can stand for very long. She apologises for the fact that her body does not look like the maternity photographs she has been looking at, because at twenty eight weeks she is carrying what a singleton mother carries at thirty eight.
There is nothing to apologise for. But she is right about one thing. A twin pregnancy is on a different clock, and a session planned the usual way will simply miss it.
So this is the version written for you.
Book earlier than everyone tells you to
The standard advice is twenty eight to thirty six weeks. For twins, that window closes early.
Most twin pregnancies in Australia are delivered somewhere around thirty six to thirty seven weeks, and a meaningful number arrive before that. Working backwards, the sensible time to photograph a twin pregnancy is twenty four to twenty eight weeks, with twenty six as the number I would circle.
At twenty six weeks you are unmistakably pregnant. The shape is beautiful and full and photographs wonderfully. You can still walk, bend, sit on the floor and get up again without assistance. You are usually not yet in the heavy fatigue that arrives in the third trimester of a multiple pregnancy.
Wait until thirty two weeks and things are different. You may be measuring close to full term. Standing for an hour may be genuinely difficult. And there is a real chance of an early arrival that takes the decision out of your hands entirely.
I would rather photograph you at twenty five weeks looking radiant than not photograph you at all because the babies came at thirty four. This is the single most important thing on this page.
The usual timing guidance is written for singleton pregnancies. Please do not use it as your guide.
How I plan the session differently
A twin maternity session is built around sitting.
That is not a limitation, it is a design choice. Some of the most beautiful maternity frames I have made are seated, and with a twin bump the seated poses are frequently the stronger ones anyway. The weight is supported, the shoulders drop, the face relaxes, and a relaxed face is worth more than any pose.
I also plan for rest. A standard session might run an hour with no real pause. Yours will run a little longer with genuine breaks built into it, water within reach, and somewhere to sit that is not the floor. If you need to stop, we stop. Nobody is being brave here.
For location, I lean towards the studio more often than I would otherwise. It is climate controlled, the bathroom is close, there is no walk in from a car park, and the light does not depend on the weather. Sydney in the warmer months is lovely for a beach session, but heat and a twin pregnancy are not friends. If your heart is set on the water, we go early in the morning and we keep it short.
Underwater sessions are a conversation rather than a yes or a no. The buoyancy is genuinely wonderful for a heavy bump, and Pool Serenity has been one of my favourite things to photograph for mothers carrying two. It depends entirely on how your pregnancy is going and what your obstetrician or midwife says. Ask them first, not me.
What to wear when you are carrying two
Everything you have read about maternity wardrobes still applies, with two adjustments.
Buy or hire in a size that fits the week of the session, not the week you are ordering. A twin bump grows quickly enough that a dress bought at twenty weeks for a twenty six week shoot will not do up. If in doubt, go up.
And favour anything with a defined line under the bust that then falls away. A fitted stretch dress is spectacular on a twin bump and shows the shape honestly. A dress with volume and movement is the gentler option if you are feeling less certain. Both photograph beautifully, so the only real question is which one you will feel like yourself in.
My longer guide on what to wear covers colour and fabric in more depth, and all of it holds for multiples.
Twin newborn sessions
Newborn sessions with twins are their own particular art, and I will be honest that they take longer.
The reason is simple. With one baby, you have one baby to settle. With two, you have a settled baby and an unsettled baby, and the moment the second one is calm the first one wakes. Everything in a twin newborn session is a matter of waiting for the overlap.
I allow substantially more time and I never book anything after one. Three hours is normal. Four is not unusual.
The frames themselves divide into two kinds. Together frames, where the babies are placed side by side or curled facing one another, which is what most families come for and which is worth every minute of the waiting. And individual frames, because these two will spend their whole lives being photographed as a pair and each of them deserves a portrait that is only theirs.
Timing for twin newborns sits a little earlier and a little tighter than for singletons. The first two weeks is the sweet spot, and if your babies spent time in special care, the clock effectively starts when they come home rather than when they were born. Tell me when you are discharged and we will work from there.
Safety is non negotiable and worth stating. Babies are never stacked or balanced against one another. Every together pose has the babies fully supported on a firm surface, and where there is any contact between them there is a hand just outside the frame.
If your pregnancy is being closely monitored
A great many twin pregnancies are. Extra scans, extra appointments, sometimes a period of reduced activity or bed rest.
If you are in that situation, please still ask. I have photographed mothers at home on their own lounge, in their own bedroom light, without going anywhere at all, and those sessions have been some of the most tender I have made. A maternity portrait does not require a location. It requires you, some light, and an hour.
I would rather rearrange everything around a pregnancy that needs care than have you decide quietly that a photograph is not for you this time. It is very much for you this time.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I book a twin maternity photoshoot?
Between twenty four and twenty eight weeks, with twenty six weeks as the ideal. Twin pregnancies commonly deliver around thirty six to thirty seven weeks, so the traditional thirty two to thirty six week window carries a real risk of missing the session entirely.
Is a twin newborn session different from a single newborn session?
Yes, mainly in length. Settling two babies takes considerably more time, so I allow three to four hours rather than two. The session includes both together frames and individual portraits of each baby.
Can I do an underwater session while carrying twins?
Possibly, but only with clearance from your obstetrician or midwife. The buoyancy can be a real relief for a heavy bump, and I have photographed multiples underwater before. It depends entirely on how your particular pregnancy is progressing.
What if my babies arrive early and spend time in special care?
We simply start the clock from the day they come home rather than the day they were born. Let me know as soon as you have a discharge date and we will find a time that works. There is no rush and no window you have missed.
Will I be standing for the whole session?
No. A twin maternity session is built around seated poses with real breaks between them. If standing is uncomfortable on the day we will not do it at all, and the photographs will be no less beautiful for it.
Let me photograph the two of them
You are carrying two people. In a few months they will be here, and the shape you are right now, the one you may be quietly self conscious about, will be gone and strangely missed.
It deserves a photograph. Earlier than you think, and with rather more sitting down than you expected.
If you are expecting twins or more, please get in touch and tell me how many weeks you are. We will work out the timing together, and we will not leave it too late.
Sincerely yours, Anastasia
