Studio, Outdoor or Underwater: Choosing the Right Setting for Your Maternity Session

One of the loveliest decisions you will make when planning your maternity photographs is where they will be taken. The setting shapes the whole mood of your images, from soft and timeless to natural and free, or something truly unlike anything else.

Many mothers ask me which setting they should choose, and my honest answer is that there is no wrong choice, only the one that feels most like you. To help you decide, here is how I think about each of my three settings, and who each one tends to suit.

The soft, timeless studio

A studio session offers something no other setting can, and that is complete control over light and mood. There are no clouds, no wind and no surprises, only soft, flattering light shaped exactly the way I want it.

Studio portraits feel timeless and elegant, with your bump as the quiet centre of everything. They suit mothers who love a clean, editorial look, who want to feel unhurried and warm indoors, or who are photographing in the cooler months. You can see how I approach this in my guide to stunning studio maternity portraits.

The natural beauty of outdoors

An outdoor session brings a sense of place and freedom that many mothers adore. Sydney gives us golden beaches, soft headlands and warm evening light, and there is something deeply romantic about being photographed in the open air.

Outdoor sessions suit mothers who feel most themselves in nature, who love movement and natural light, and who dream of a beach at golden hour. Timing matters here, as the hour after sunrise or before sunset gives the softest light. My guides to mastering outdoor maternity photography and the best Sydney locations speak to this more.

The serenity of underwater

For something truly unforgettable, my underwater Pool Serenity sessions create weightless, ethereal images unlike anything else. Suspended in water, your body moves with a grace that feels almost otherworldly, and the results are breathtaking.

Underwater sessions suit mothers who want something unique and artistic, who feel calm in water, and who love the idea of images no one else will have. It is my signature offering, and you can learn more on my underwater maternity photography page.

What each setting asks of you on the day

It helps to know not just how each setting looks, but how each one feels to be photographed in, because that is often what really decides it.

A studio session asks the least of you physically. You are warm, you are private, and everything happens within a few steps. There is a change room, a mirror, somewhere to sit, and no walking on sand in late pregnancy. For mothers who are tired, sore or simply want to feel cocooned, this matters more than any aesthetic consideration.

An outdoor session asks a little more. There is usually a short walk from the car, uneven ground underfoot, and weather that may need us to move quickly or reschedule. None of this is difficult, but it is worth knowing if you are near the end of your pregnancy or feeling less mobile than usual. I always choose locations with easy access and plan gentle routes, and we take as many breaks as you need.

An underwater session asks the most, and gives back the most. You do not need to be a strong swimmer, and you are never out of your depth or under pressure. But you do need to be comfortable putting your face in the water and letting yourself float. We practise gently before a single frame is taken, and if it does not feel right on the day, we simply stop.

Choosing with the Sydney seasons in mind

Sydney gives us a genuinely long outdoor season, but the calendar still shapes what is possible.

Through summer, the light at the beach is glorious in the early morning and the last hour of the day, though the middle of the day is far too harsh and too hot for a heavily pregnant body. Autumn is my quiet favourite, with warm water, soft light and far fewer people on the sand. Winter is when the studio truly comes into its own, offering the same beautiful light in June that it offers in January, entirely regardless of what the sky is doing.

If your due date means your session falls in the cooler months, please do not feel you are settling for second best. Some of the most striking maternity portraits I have made were taken in the middle of winter, indoors, with the heater on.

How to choose the setting that suits you

With three beautiful options, choosing comes down to a few gentle questions. Which images make your heart beat a little faster when you imagine them on your wall? How do you want to feel on the day, cocooned and calm, free and natural, or adventurous and creative?

Consider the season too, as studio suits cooler months while beaches shine in warmer light. And remember you do not always have to choose just one, because some mothers love combining a studio and outdoor look. If you are unsure, I am always happy to talk it through and help you decide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a studio or outdoor maternity shoot better?

Neither is better, they simply suit different mothers. Studio offers soft, controlled, timeless light and comfort indoors, while outdoor brings natural light, a sense of place and the romance of a beach at golden hour.

When is the best light for an outdoor maternity session?

The hour after sunrise or before sunset, often called golden hour, gives the softest and most flattering light. I plan outdoor sessions around these times for the loveliest results.

What is an underwater maternity session like?

It is calm, weightless and artistic. Suspended in water, your body moves with a natural grace, creating ethereal images unlike any other setting. It is my signature Pool Serenity experience.

Can I combine more than one setting?

Often, yes. Some mothers love pairing a soft studio look with a natural outdoor set. Where time allows I am happy to shape a session around a combination.

Which setting is best in winter?

Studio sessions are ideal in the cooler months, offering warmth, comfort and beautiful controlled light regardless of the weather outside.
