Questions to Ask Before You Book Your Maternity Photographer
Choosing the person who will photograph your pregnancy is a more personal decision than it first appears. You are inviting someone to capture your body, your family and one of the most tender seasons of your life. It is worth taking a moment to make sure they are the right fit.
I always welcome questions from the mothers who reach out to me. A thoughtful question tells me you care about these images, and it helps us both know whether we are a match. To make that easier, here are the questions I gently encourage you to ask any maternity photographer before you book, along with a little of how I think about each one.
Questions about their style and experience
Every photographer sees the world differently, and their style shapes how your images will feel. Ask to see full galleries rather than a few polished favourites, so you can picture your own session in their hands.
A few questions worth asking. How would you describe your style, and does it lean editorial, natural or timeless? Do you specialise in maternity, or is it one of many things you photograph? Can I see a complete recent session? For me, maternity and motherhood are my heart, not a sideline, and I am always happy to share full galleries so you can see the consistency and care in every frame.
Questions about what is included
Understanding what you are actually booking saves confusion later, and this is where clarity matters most. It is far kinder to ask openly than to assume.
Ask what the session includes, how many images you receive, and whether prints or albums are part of the package. Ask about the investment clearly, so there are no surprises. I set all of this out gently in my guide to what is included in a maternity session, and I am always glad to talk it through personally so you know exactly what to expect.
Questions about the session itself
The experience on the day matters just as much as the final images, especially when you are heavily pregnant and want to feel at ease. A good photographer will guide you through every moment so you never feel unsure of what to do with your hands or where to look.
Ask where the session takes place, whether it is in a studio, on location or in water, and what happens if the weather turns. Ask how long it lasts and whether gowns are provided. I offer studio portraits, on-location sessions and my underwater Pool Serenity experience, and I keep a collection of gowns so you feel beautiful without having to source a thing. My guides to preparing for your maternity photoshoot and what to wear will also help you arrive feeling calm and ready.
Questions about prints, albums and the final artwork
Your images deserve a life beyond a folder on your phone, so it is worth asking how a photographer helps you enjoy them afterwards. Some hand over files and stop there, while others walk with you all the way to the wall.
Ask whether they offer fine-art prints, framing and albums, and whether they help you choose. This is something I care about deeply. Through my Heirloom Studio I guide you in turning your favourite frames into prints and heirlooms made to last, which I write about in my article on turning your maternity photos into fine-art prints.
Questions about editing, delivery and timing
It is worth knowing how and when you will actually receive your images, so nothing feels uncertain after the day. Ask how long the turnaround takes, how your gallery is delivered, and what level of retouching is included.
For my sessions, images are hand edited with natural, timeless retouching rather than heavy alterations, because I want you to look like the most beautiful version of yourself, not someone else. I share your finished photographs through a private online gallery, and I tell you the expected timing when we book so you always know what to look forward to.
Trusting your instinct
Beyond every practical question, there is one quiet thing to pay attention to, and that is how you feel when you speak with them. You will be vulnerable in front of this person, and feeling safe and understood changes everything about the images you create together.
If a photographer makes you feel calm, seen and a little bit excited, that matters as much as any answer on a list. Trust that feeling. The best portraits come from a place of ease, and ease begins with trust.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I ask a maternity photographer before booking?
Ask about their style and experience, what the package includes and how many images you receive, where and how the session runs, and whether they offer prints and albums. Then notice how comfortable you feel speaking with them.
How far in advance should I book?
Reach out early in your second trimester. Maternity portraits are best taken between twenty-eight and thirty-six weeks, and reserving your date early gives us time to plan your style and gowns without any rush.
Do you provide gowns for the session?
Yes. I keep a considered collection of gowns so you can feel beautiful and comfortable without needing to buy or source anything for your shoot.
Will you help me print my images?
Absolutely. Through my Heirloom Studio I help you choose images, sizes, framing and albums, so your photographs become heirlooms on the wall rather than forgotten files.
How long until I receive my photos?
I tell you the expected turnaround when we book and deliver your finished images through a private online gallery. Each photograph is hand edited with natural, timeless retouching.
